Default '06 P-71 trans - what years fit?

Hey folks.

Bad week. My '04 P-74 gave up the bottom end ghost last week. Found an '06 P-71 ex copper with 3700 hours which I picked up today, and woohoo! The trans gave it up in the first hundred miles. The '04 has a solid trans, (presumably both the AODE or R470W) the question is .. will it be a direct drop in? Both have the 4.6L modular V-8. I'm guessing yes, but might as well confirm before doing the do on my back with the skeeters and gravel.

(In hindsight, I now think that the way too clean fluid wasn't excellent maintenance, but the dealer trying to hide .. or fluid, filter, and hope .. a problem away.

Thanks for reading.

You might do a little more checking because some police vehicles had some special heavy duty components. Nobody likes those kinds of surprises.

Thanks Hanky. I've since determined that indeed, they (thankfully) are identical units - although the one in the '06 is not original.

Man I'm getting way too old to be doing this bench press under jack stands thing. i recall it actually being "fun" .. 30 years ago.

FWIW, I've been cruising the threads looking to offer a bit of help as well as begging for it, i just haven't found anything that i could answer with any conviction.

Jim.

Nope, I'm wrong. there's an extra 2 wire connector on the '06 case - though the casting number is the same. Just figured this out after 40 hours in the mud. Trans guy I called said they won't work. Oh well, guess I'm taking the 06 tranny for a rebuild.

Sadly, this $3000 car - which is a bit rough - with lost wages and a tranny will now be a $7000 car. I could have bought a top shelf used CVPI for that. I guess we learn.

There is a positive side to all this, and that is, when you get done,if that is possible ,,,,,,,,,,,, you will know what you have now.

There are a lot of vehicles out there that the owner gave up because it seemed nobody could fix a problem and they spent a lot of $$$ so they unloaded/traded it Now it became somebody else's problem.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle a while and want to be able to depend on it , consider installing a remanufactured trans. They cost a little more than a rebuild, come with a better warranty, Get all new parts and have all the latest updates in them. The vehicle is what it is, but one trans problem is one too many.
I realize it is easy to spend someone else's $$$ and not knowing all the circumstances , but I felt it was worth mentioning.

Not sure what you mean by reman .. factory? I've been doing business with my guy for, hmm - over 15 years, he's a bit more expensive than the average shop, but he's old school hardcore and doesn't cut corners. One of those guys who wants his customers for life. Getting rare in this day and age.

Turns out after pulling the '06 unit .. there were those ugly yellow grease marker stains on the top of the bell. Surprise. Wrecker unit. Dunno about you, but IMO only an idiot would toss in a boneyard auto. Too much of a dice roll.

Know what you mean though .. not sure how long the body will be on the road, but afterward I'll have a rolling chassis that i know what's what in. Something for a future project maybe.

Jim..
