Default Choke problems

Hi I have a 1986 E 150 4.9L One barrel carb. I live In PA. When the weather first gets cold, the van sometimes doesnt want to start. It will start fine when I would first start it in the morning etc. If I run it for a while, like going a few miles to the store, come out 30 min or so later, it wont start. I have to hold the pedal to the floor cranking the engine off and on for sometimes 30 min or so. Yesterday I got gas then tried to start it, wont start. This time It took me over 2 hours to get it started. Thank goodness I had an extra battery under my seat! It doesnt do it all the time. That same day It started fine in the morning, I drove it about 40 miles, stopped for an hour and it started fine until I stopped 20 min later for gas. Sound like a sticking chock to me but what's sticking? The linkage, or is the auto chock faulty?

doesnt seem like it is. It runs normal. Although the last time a, after it started, it ran a bit rough for a few minutes then smoothed out
