My son has called about troubles with a 1995 Ranger he is driving. 4.0 engine with about 150K on it. Battery was replaced about a month ago.

A couple of times in the past week he has driven it somewhere and let it sit a short period of time (less than an hour) and when trying to restart it will crank, fire, run rough a few seconds and die. Same thing over and over. Let it sit a few hours and cool down and it started right up and runs fine. No problems while driving or when starting cold.

Today he drove it somewhere, let it sit 3 hrs, went out to start it and it ran rough idling up and down then died after about 5 seconds -- he said he never touched the gas pedal. Tried to start it again and it ran 1 second, tried a few more times and never fired. He let it sit 5 minutes and tried again and it started right up and ran fine.

On the way home, shut it off for 20 minutes at the gym, tried to restart and experienced same thing. Left it in parking lot and will try again in the morning.

I have not had a chance to look at it. Any ideas where to start looking?
