Stalls when hot
2012, e-150, 4.6 , 108k miles, When cold van starts and drives. After getting up to temp, at idle, van stalls and will not start until cooled. Showed codes cat and O2. Have replaced clutch fan, fuel pump, left cat, all O2 sensors, EMC. Now shows no codes. $6,000 later; Van is boat anchor but I can not afford that big a boat!
There are so many possibilities on this. Before throwing parts at it start from the easiest, you need a capable scanner to read the temperature of ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature), get the reading when it's hot. If you think your ECT is bad don't just buy a new one, use contact cleaner and clean just the electrical connector. Second easiest is to unplug the MAF electrical connector next time it stalls, check and see if you can start it up. Your fuel filter ever been replaced, when?
Thanks for suggestions. Do to my having to hire all work, it would be cheaper to replace sensors rather than troubleshoot. Any other ideas about any other potentially troublesome sensors? The fuel filter was changed 4 months, 2000 miles ago. Interestingly the problems started soon after, uuuuuummmmmm
There are so many possibilities on this that's why I picked the easiest for you so you don't throw massive parts at it.
For the ECT I mentioned previously you just need a scanner capable to read the ECT temperature, regardless of temperature the temp gauge tells you. When your PCM gets wrong reading from your ECT numerous things can happen. Say your engine is hot, a bad reading from ECT might think it's not just hot, it's already overheating. ECT doesn't go bad, it's just the electrical connector that needs cleaning to get correct reading.

If the ECT electrical connector needed cleaning and thought the engine was overheating wouldn't it go into "Limp Mode" rather than just shutting down? My F150 did that a few years ago, and I just had a Transit Connect van do it too, but neither one actuallly shut down, and I was still able to drive it home, albeit at a reduced speed.
I'm wondering about that fuel filter... is it possible they put it in backwards and it's restricting too much fuel when things get hot? My E150 5.4L has a large filter canister on the frame under the driver's seat and when I replaced it I almost put it in backwards. Just thinking out loud here...

Most of the time when your car is in LIMP mode, all the nonessential devices will get shut down, for example, ABS, HVAC, power window/door and radio. If it's overheating at certain temperature it will shut down, your PCM is smart enough to figure out that shutting down the nonessential devices wouldn't help and that means your ECT is probably good, it's the coolant temperature sensor on your gauge cluster that needs cleaning.
Like I mentioned previously, stalls when hot so many possibilities, it can be fuel, air, ignition, ECT, and even bad wiring. Checking ECT with a scanner happens to be the easiest and overheating is also something you don't want to hear.
