You should never have to smell anti freeze unless something is leaking. The smoke you see is the tell tale clue. If you cannot determine where the leak is located , just have someone that can use a cooling system pressure tester, where pressure is applied to the cooling system at the fill location usually up to 15 psi. The leak is usually easy to spot with the pressure applied. Repairs can be done after the leak is located.
