1999 Ford Escort acceleration noise
Hello all, I have a 1999 Ford Escort with 120,000 miles which is making a strange noise: after 10 minutes of driving the car, I hear a rattling/whizzing sound when I try to accelerate-it lasts about 4-5 seconds and then goes away- I can drive with my foot on the gas pedal to about 40 mph but when I go over 45 miles per hour (press down on the gas pedal harder) I hear this noise...., the oil has been changed recently, air filter, etc.- I have no problem accelerating though (just the strange noise) and no service engine soon nor check engine light comes on... Anyone have any idea what might be going on? and any fixes to stop the noise?
Thanks,
Edy Escort

hi there, ive owned quite a few 3rd gen escorts and on a handfull of them i took notice that when you get a ratteling noise its usually the cat heat shields or the pipe heat sheilds (under the oil pan) or on the ends of the flex pipe the metal rings that protect where the braiding meets the pipe come loose and hang on the pipe causing a rattle. and to fix the 2 heat sheilds you can put a large hose clamp over the cat and 2 medium sized hose clamps on the sheilds under the oil pan and as for the flex pipe rings you can just cut them off or have them tack welded back on. hope this helps
