Default 99 escort dead engine?

ok im tryin to help my cousin on this so baer with me. he said it started to make a knocking noise when he started accelerating up my driveway. he shut it of right away let set for a little bit and tried to start it it would fire but not start. then it wouldnt even crank i noticed that the battery post was loose inside the battery so we tried a diff battery and still nothing. it acts like the starter pulls hard when you turn the key but wont crank. it is full of oil and coolant, he said the check engine light didnt come on until after it started knocking so i cant believe the engine is locked up. i thought maybe a valve drop intoa cylinder, we too the valve cover off and everything looked alright. could a timing belt have something to do with it? so if anybody has any ideas that arent too crazy i'll take em. thanks

yes,it could be a worn timing belt has jumped a tooth. With the engine now timed incorrectly, you may have also cooked the starter by overworking it.
