Of course a lot will depend on how much you want to spend.. Living on Long Island I'm sure you know, it won't be cheap, at least for a good one.

If you want to post the symptoms and conditions , may someone will come along and help you out.
We know the year, make, model ,but not the engine size or the reason you feel it requires an experienced ?? tech.

thanks for the reply. it's 5.4L typical for the expeditions

I was driving on the eexpressway and it randomly died. managed to coast off the 495 onto the service road. It took a while to turn over, after 30 mins it turned on but sounded like loud phaser kock. but more like a diesel eengine. I can turn it on and it idles normal for about 5 mins. after that it starts to make some noise but not really loud. as soon as you touch the throttle it gets really loud and diesel like again.

The engines with VVT required clean and good engine oil. If regular oil changes were not done, the engines had a way of getting even.

Could this maybe be a part of the picture ?

I had the truck for 5 years. the prior history is unknown. it was a female owner that had it for 3 years. prior to that unknown as well. while i owned it, oil was done every 3k miles with ford oil and filters. perhaps neglected prior to me but i did what i could. if an engine is needed ill get it replaced. Just want to make sure it absolutely needs it before i soend the money.
