2002 Explorer won't start unless switching from Park to Neutral and back
Hope somebody can help. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer.
It randomly will not start until we shift from Park to Neutral and back sometimes up to 3 times. It appears to be occurring more frequently.
Ideas?

Part of the starter activating circuit was controlled by what was formally known as the neutral safety switch and now is known by the term trans range switch (same part). I would suspect either the switch is faulty or the linkage at the switch on the side of the transmission may be slightly out of adjustment. Some vehicles have a nylon piece that has a serrated surface and involves releasing the nylon retainer and repositioning the cable from the shift lever and the range switch so as to make good contact in the park or neutral position. Not a difficult thing to check and correct if necessary.
