Default light to check gas cap

Hello Everyone. My 2002 Ford Explorer gas and the check gas cap light has come on, no alarm just the light. I checked the seal for dirt and it is clean, I tried putting some grease on the seal and a new cap and the light remains on. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks, John

Alarm Codes like these will usually remain on until the codes are cleared by your service tech or by yourself with a OBD scan reader that allows it.

The monitor that runs to verify vapor emissions only runs after certain conditions are met. like engine RPM, road speed , throttle position etc.
When it runs and everything passes the light will go out..

I would recommend pulling codes just so you know exactly which code it is, I think there are two or three codes that can set that light.
Clear the code and see if it comes back.
Do you have a aftermarket gas cap?
