Default 1984 Ford F-150 302

my son recently purchased a 1984 Ford F-150 Not sure if we call it a manual or automatic. The shifter is on the floor I pull it down once that’s reverse. Next seems to be drive but in 3 modes. I’m very confused. Because while driving it it never seems to shift or do normal transmission activity. There is a parking break but no clutch.

What if we tried this?
If this is a correct assumption,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Picture the shifting lever as placed in the first position for going forward, the 3 modes could be
Drive--- D2 second gear forward- - D1 first gear foreward.
The older transmissions were allowed to stay in low(D1) and not usually upshift unless a high RPM was reached, then if you selected D2 , it allowed the trans to start moving forward in second gear and not upshift . If you selected the shift position after reverse ,then neutral ,then Drive . If, that is the way it is set up , it should upshift through all three gears automatically. Let us know if this helps solve the question.
