I have an 88 lariat xlt 5.0 automatic and the computer was replaced before I got it, but It's got issues and I suspect it's the wrong computer. Everyone I talk to just says look at the code on your ecu but what if it's the wrong one? There's like 3 different options.

Sure.... this thing has had a litany of issues, including leaky injectors and messed up and shorted wiring. Ive got that fixed but I'm getting a code 31. When I traced that to the egr solenoid, the red wire that goes directly to the ecm does have low voltage. My other symptoms are rough idle and bogging under acceleration. When I try to go fast or uphill after a few minutes of driving, it completely bogs and wont go forward but doesn't die. When I take my foot off the pedal, it lurches forward a but. When I turn the truck off then immediately back on, it'll pick up and take right off... though it never really wants to get above 40 mph. I'm thinking it's a computer issue. The aftermarket one was put in by the same idiots who did all the messed up wiring and some other questionable stuff.

 

Maybe take it to a specialist? Sometimes it's worth the extra cost.

 

Sometimes a Ford Parts dept will be able to tell you what the correct number for the ECM would be , worth a try.

There seem to be a few related problems that need to be checked out and corrected one at a time.
We usually try to make sure all systems and components work properly before condemning the ECM.

There are ways to verify systems and components function correctly with out the ECM controlling them.
Not a job for someone that does not have the info and equip to perform those checks.
