Rest assured that lever operates a mechanism inside/under the seatback..
If you are careful, that cover on the lever may be removable.allowing you to see more.
Can we ask why it needs to be removed ?
Never had to remove one, but you might be able to see more with the entire seat removed and then looking up from the bottom.
