Yours has a drain plug or not? If not consider upgrading it to dorman 265-854, if it's the first time doing the transmission fluid change on your truck, also grab the filter and the reusable gasket. Ford says every 30k-60k.

He said 151k miles so I assume it's his first time changing it. At 151k it seems a bit high for ford but most other cars you do it every 100k to 120k for automatic, and a bit sooner on manual.
Ford says every 30k-60k interval just because: 1) their transmissions are known to be not so reliable, 2) trying to get away from taking responsibility and not to get blamed on.

If this is really the 1st time changing it, which fluid to use depends on your driving style, and where your truck is located, and how often you drive it, freeway or stop-n-go, how long you warm up your truck before driving or just start and go. Just be sure NOT to do a flush this time or next time or maybe never do it, inspect the magnet then decide if you really want to flush it next time. If you live in Arizona or Texas, without a doubt go for full synthetic. If you do stop-n-go more than highway, get full synthetic and change it sooner next time, like 50k. If you don't like to warm up your truck just start and go, you should at the very least, set the parking brake, then shift to every gear for 5 to 10 seconds or so before driving.

Synthetic fluid can handle more heat.

Yes, the oil cooks first.

What happens to the trans fluid once it gets near cook temp?
Most times slipping generates the heat and by the time the oil cooks , the slipping parts have had it.

The oil coolers help, a lot, most times.
