Did you check for a good fuel delivery/volume to the carb, and the filter itself?. They had a small filter and easily plug..

I sprayed carb cleaner down it but it had no effect. Should I take the carb apart and clean it more thoroughly?

Something you can check and won't cost anything except a few minutes of your time.
With the engine off and air cleaner removed , whether it's a 2 or 4 barrel carb, when you move the accelerator linkage to full throttle you should see fuel squirt out 2 jets every time you floor the pedal. If you don't see this you could have a poor functioning accelerator pump on the carburetor. Make sure the choke blade is open all the way so you can see down in the carb.
Let us know what you find, OK?

I checked and fuel comes out. It will even rev all the way if its in park or neutral just not in drive.

I would suspect an ignition problem.
As Gary previously stated ,a defective coil could cause this problem.
Are all the electrical connections from the battery on up in good shape?
Sometimes simple things,,,,,,,,,,,,,
When were the plugs changed last?

Il check the coil. The plugs were just replaced a couple months ago.
