Default Power stroke engine

First let me say I have always owned a ford truck. F250, F150 and a Ranger. Never have I owned a Diesel. I am entering retirement !! That being said I am looking at a fifth wheel camper trailer about 14,000.00 lb. it’s a toy hauler I plan to bring the motorcycle. Plus supplies looking at probably 17,000lbs. (Heavy). Eventually planning a trip cross country. I am looking for HONEST answers on the Power Stroke engine. The GOOD the BAD and the UGLY.
How much to maintain this engine. Delete kits, Fuel costs, and general experiences with this engine. I am not a mechanic so if you could give me your advice in layman’s terms it would save me a trip to Google.
thanks to all
Mark

Default ford truck

Mark; wow quite a ? and or subject ive owned a toy hauler for 10yrs and pulled my current 40 ft. TH w/ 11500 dry wt for probably 7yr with a 06 f-250 with 6.0 diesel first thing and i dont know your budget but unless you know history and the things done to the engine i would stay away from the 6.0 's ive put about 9000 in mine with extended warranty helping with some after the 6.0's they had the 6.4 diesel which i think ran from 08 to 011 or 012 not sure you can look that up , after that they have a 6.7 which i have heard the least complaints about and im in farm country where there are alot towing and heavy towing . i will say this ive talked to people that have towed with the three major brands of PU 's and there are problems w/ all, depending what day yours is made LOL.. with that being said im a ford guy so i am a little biasd . diesels are more expensive, to maintain oil changes are probably 5x more altho i use synthetic oil and there is more fuel filters etc. diesels have more low end power for hills and mountains of course , i probably get around 12miles per gal when pulling my TH . there are shops at least in my area that are could at working on diesels and deleting on especially 6.0's ,i had my EGR valve deleted . im pretty happy with my 250 but you might compare with single wheel 350's , i did put air bags on my back axle after a couple yrs so i could distribute wt. better more of personal choice more then any thing ,i know of a guy pulling a 45ft TH w/ a3/4 ton dodge with factory air bags . hope this helps ROD

Rod,
Thanks for your input. I am a Ford guy as well. And YES I am cautious on buying a I will say “well used” diesel. Never know what has been done. I would entertain a low mileage diesel. You got me thinking on the 6.7. As far as maintaining the engine I knew it would be more than my gas 5.4. And I hear all the wines about this engine or this make. I spoke to a diesel mechanic and he woudn’t buy ANY engine after the emissions so I guess that means what 07 ? I own a 09 F 150 . I sure as **** ain’t going backwards. As for the extended warranty I have had great luck with AAA.
Happy Trails

Have a budget in mind?
The 6.7 is a towing beast,, later builds be the higher output, and shift select, tow/haul, exhaust brake,, and plenty of grunt would be my choice.
Ive worked on both the 6.0 and 6.4,, owned a few 6.0’s and my last one ran like a top to 174K, had the best of care, solid runner when I sold it off for my 17 6.7. At least for a 6.0..
Id stay away from the 6.4, 6.0 would be a better bet ‘If’ lower mileage, regular documented service intervals an well cared for. And of course checked thoroughly prior to purchase.
When considering towing heavy, the 6.7 is going to yield better mileage. Services/ oil, count of the north side of double.
My 6.0’s best MPG respecting headwind, soft on the pedal was high16. My 6.7 averages 17.5 in combination of mountain grades and city. Out on the open highway, fairly easy to see 20. Keeping in mind the SD is like pushing a brick through the wind. Generally higher numbers are whiteness when conserving speed...
