R12 a/c
Hello everyone I am new to this forum. I have a question about R12 ac. I just bought an 1985 F250 and it still has the original system in it. How do I convert it over to 134A? And is R12 still available?
There may be a bit of work involved..
Suppose we look at how the cards are stacked?
You might be able to get some R12, but it is hard to come across, EXPENSIVE and you have to watch out for counterfeit R12.. Not what they say it is .
There are kits where you can convert over to R134A . It can require to change all the hoses and compressor oil. The molecules of R134A are smaller than R12 and it can leak out the old hoses. Everybody was always looking for a "Drop In " , meaning no alteration required, but to my knowledge one has never been found.
If the condition of the vehicle is worth it , you might take your time , gather all the info you can and then decide if you want to proceed..
R134A pretty soon will also become a little more difficult to buy. Certification will be required in some places before they will sell it to you.
Not a very encouraging picture .

You can swap to “Enviro-Safe” refrigerant. They sell kits, or just the fill. Other than changing the hose connections (not required, but done to ID the fill and so not to system cross contaminate) it’s compatible with R12 systems. I used it on my 72 Dodge after a comp replacement, and it blows cold!
