Question 2006 - Shifting into Reverse Quirk

I just repo'd a 2006 Ford 500 SEL from my daughter. I noticed, when shifting into proper reverse, the car actually feels in neutral. I have to move the shifter slightly above reverse and then it will engage properly. What would cause this?

Do we know if anyone recently worked on the trans?

Not that I’m aware of, but who knows. She wouldn’t tell me if there was. 🙃 I don’t think so.

The reason I asked was, on the trans is a manual lever position switch (MLPS) which if it has been moved or is defective could cause a problem like this.

The indicator in the dash shows one thing and the switch may not agree with what the dash shows.
