2004 Freestar rear lift gate handle
Pop off the 1" x 1" access cover on the inside of the door. You can then try to work the latch to open the door. I have the schematics to fix the handle if you would like them. Just send me a PM, with your email address, and I can send them to you.

Just a suggestion:
It appears to me that part of the cause of lift gate handle problems (apart from design flaws) might be pulling in too much of an upward direction on the handle, instead of more straight out which releases the latch with less strain on the handle parts.

Managed to reattach the handle (luckily it wasn't broken) on a 07 Freestar this weekend with help from a friend. After removing the small square plug on the inside of interior trim panel, we slid a large screwdriver in and after moving it back and forth we managed to unlock the rear hatch. We then were able to take off the interior trim pieces which allowed us to see the inside mechanism behind teh whte peice of glued on foam. We then slid the rod over with a large screwdriver from the inside which allowed us to slide the handle in from the outside and reattach the handle (quite a tight fit to get it in). I can now use the handle again to open and close hatch, but an inch black spring with straight ends fell out when we were trying to attach the handle. It does not seem to affect the opening and closing of the hatch but is there a diagram to show where it belongs and does anyone know what it serves? Thanks
