I have a 2003 ranger 3.0 sohc auto and I have been throwing some ideas around. I know you there is always the basics like an intake exhaust but Iwas thinking.... what if i put high compression pistons a cam the fuel rail and injectors along with cold air and half back exhaust with bigger headers, I am just thinking about swapping my parts with a mustang gt's.. Let me know if i have completly lost my mind or not..

 

drop a 302 in it, a guy on rangerpowersports did it and it passes inspection. it would probably be cheaper and if set up right you wouldnt loose much milage due to the torque

 

Won't pass CA style emissions, the engine would have to be an 03 or newer. No factory Fords with 302s since 2001/2000 explorer. In addition, Ford never built a V8 our class. To pass CA stlye emission, you need model year or newer, ECM needs to be programmed with VIN of Ranger it is being installed in and the engine has to have been offered in the class. IE Jeep wrangler could have a Hemi 5.7 installed due to Chyrsler having built a Jeep Larado with it and they are both SUVs. Ranger lose becuase they are compact trucks, V8s are in full size trucks.............. I had been toying with the idea for a while. However, the 3.8 block old in the mustang is the same as the windstar, and the new freestars 4.2 is the 3.8 bore and stroked. Its puts out 200 horse @ 4200rpm and 268 ftlb torqe at 3600. It makes my van move quite nicely from the line and pulls trailer well with a combo (van, trailer, stuff) weight of about 7000lbs. I have been mulling this one over............
