Timing and timing belt?
I JUST REPLACED THE TIMING BELT IN MY 93 RANGER WITH THE 2.3 ENGINE, WHAT A JOB,
NOW! IT STARTS AND RUNS AND SOUNDS FINE AT IDEL AND SEEMS TO RUN LIKE IT DID BEFORE THE BELT BROKE (BUT) I CAN HEAR THE VALVES CHATTER, 
MOSTLY IN 3rd AND 4th GEAR IS WHEN I HEAR IT MOST WHILE GIVING IT THE GAS. I CHECKED THE TIMING MARKS ON THE CRANK AND CAM SPROKETS A NUMBER OF TIMES BEFORE PUTTING EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER. WHERE DID I GO WRONG? 
I'M NOT SURE HOW TO CHECK THE TIMING ON THESE NON -DISTRIBUTORED ENGINES.

Try loosening your tensioner on your timing belt and turn your crank counter clockwise a notch on your belt. I had to do that on mine a couple of times to get it right. I have a 1991 Ranger with the 2.3 engine. I backed it off a notch on the belt, re-tightened the tensioner, then test drove it. You may have to do this a couple of times to get it right. If it doesn't do better that way, you may have to turn yours clockwise. Mine had no power going up hills. When I backed it off a notch at a time, I got it where it needed to be.

It kinda sounds like your timing is too advanced and you are getting spark ping from having the timing too advanced. It usually sounds like shaking a can of spray paint with a stirring marble in it.
You should check the timing to see if it is correct, but as I check your post it says your 93 is non-distributed...? I can search Napa online to find a distributor cap for a 93 Ranger...?
This engine I believe uses a spout to help the engine's computer adjust the timing. This needs to be removed to check the timing. It's a computer chipish deal that needs to be removed so the timing can be chacked without computer adjustment.

Timing and timing
They are very similar to each other. Both are 6 channels, belt driven, have a separate gyro, speed controller, have upgrade parts available. Both are for experienced flyers only. These are not for beginners.
