So my son just got a 2002 F250 SD with the 7.3 Powerstroke. Here is the issue and what we have tried to remedy the situation. We have a running light issue. Only the right side comes on. Also have no turn signals. We do have hazard lights. Here is what we have checked so far. Replaced bulb on left side. Checked all fuses. Replaced the turn signal relay. We have no turn signal indicator on dash when turning them on. They do come on and flash with the hazards. What else should we be looking at? Bad turn signal switch? Not sure where to go from here. Help!
If all the lights work when hazards are selected,,,,,,,,,,,,I would look very carefully at every light, all 4, and make sure all have the same level of illumination.
If there is a grounding problem on the left side of the vehicle for the signal lamps , they may be using the parking light elements . The light(s) look like they appear to be working , but not the right parts.
This requires some particular checking and if all is OK, sw could be the problem.
Are they all halogen bulbs or you upgraded to LED bulbs?
Parking lights first. You said right side working so I assume both front and rear. And left side not working, both front and rear too?
Let say there are 2 flasher relays, how do you know the relay you replaced must be for turn signal and not for the hazard?
Do you have multimeter and jumper wries?
The parking light question to you remains unanswered so I will skip that until I get a reply from you.
So let's go over the turn signal first instead.
Above diagram locate K2 indicator relay.
Below diagram locate the same K2.
This is a single relay (both turn signal and hazard) with a normally closed setup type because hazard needs to function with engine off key out situation.
For turn signal to work: K2 relay needs to be energized as: terminal 85 (already always hot), terminal 86 (already grounded at all time), terminal 30 (requires key to run position), terminal 87 (gets 12v feed from terminal 30), your turn signal switch does NOT need to be turn to left or right, the 12v is already there it's up to you to toggle turn signal to left or right to activate blinker. The 12v feed from terminal 30 to terminal 87 to turn signal switch in off position and it terminated right there.
For hazard to work: K2 relay does NOT need to be energized as: terminal 85 (already always hot), terminal 86 (already grounded at all time). When the relay is NOT energized, terminal 87a is always hot, this is so-called normally closed setup. 90% or higher uses normally open setup. The hazard switch is pretty much an inline cut off switch between the relay and the blinker so your hazard can function when engine off key out.
When terminal 85 is always hot and terminal 86 is always ground, your k2 relay energizes or not, sends 12v to the multifunction switch. Look up 2nd diagram from the top you can see terminal 87 connects to terminal 2 on the switch whereas 87a connects to terminal 3.
So let's assume your brand new k2 relay is good you should get 12v at terminal 2 of the multifunction switch when key in run without toggling the turn signal switch. Please check and get back. It's circuit 44 shown below diagram and the wire is in LB (light blue). Use voltmeter and probe terminal 2, key in run, you get 12v or not.
Next step is to probe the (17) right turn and (16) left turn to find out why 16 is not working when you reply to my original parking light question.
You can also follow the pinpoint test K pdf below.
So we got under the back of the truck today to check for broken/damaged wires that might be causing the issue. Found 2 wires that are not connected to anything on the passenger side. Also found a socket for a 194 bulb with no bulb in it. It isn’t a license plate socket as both of those are in place. Also found a round 4 pin male plug that doesn’t seem to have a female plug to plug in to. Any idea what these are for? And what might be missing from these 2 wires we found? All help much appreciated.
Have you had a chance to test on the terminal 2 I mentioned previously?
As far as the missing connectors or sockets in the back please attach some pics here. Look at below diagram first.
So in the midst of trying to find why the turn signals aren’t working we hooked something up wrong and now we have dash lights dancing around and no start or crank. Did we blow the batteries or did we fry the ecu ?HELP!
It would be a good idea if you told us EVERYTHING you did. There is no way any useful suggestions can be offered without being there to see everything or not knowing what was touched..
This does not have to be complicated, but it is not smart to assume , if you know what I mean.
Truck has an aftermarket back up camera. In the process of checking the wires in the back we disconnected some wires associated with the camera. In the process of reconnecting everything I accidentally plugged a power cable into a power cable and that’s when everything went crazy on the dash and lost power. We disconnected both batteries and then hooked them back up. It’s normal for a couple minutes then the lights start going crazy and power goes out again. We are trying a hard reset on the ecm now by disconnecting the batteries and letting it sit with the key in the accessories on position. We will be hooking the batteries back up shortly to try again. Hope this helps with understanding what we did and someone can help us figure out what to do next
UPDATE reconnected batteries and still not right
