HI, I have an 86 ford ranger, is there an inexpensive replacement for the fuel filter. It has 2 lines in and out. Thanks in advance, Mike

 

Does your vehicle by any chance have two fuel tanks?

 

A ranger I think does not have two tanks. I'll bet the fuel filter needs those slip in plastic do-hickys that release the keepers around the fuel filter tubes. Use the release on one end, then again on the other end.


I can attest if some fuel drips into your ear ... it hurts like hell.




A set of those release things [if the truck uses these keepers] can be purchased from auto parts houses. [AutoZone] is where I bought mine six-seven years ago for my '97 Expedition.


Are you sure your looking at the fuel filter? Two lines? Vapor return line? Continuous flow bypass line?

 

Being you have a 86 Ranger, it's the first year that Ford went with fuel injection on the Ranger's / BII's. You should have both a cannister filter for the low pressure in-tank pump and a in-line filter for the high pressure pump. Ford eliminated the cannister filter element in 1988, but continued to use the cannister housing as it's required for the fuel return. You can removed the cannister filter element, but you have to retain the housing as it is where the fuel return line goes to. You should find an in-line filter just before the high pressure pump along the frame rail. This is the only filter you would need to change out periodically.

On a side note, the 1983-1988 Ranger had the option of an 8 gallon auxillery rear tank. Ford has used the same inner bed skin from 1983-2012. If you look at the rear left side of the bed, you will see the "PUCKER" where the filler neck would have been, the same as the front filler is.
