Question Just how important is oil viscosity (the number after the W)

I havebeen using 5W30 for.......ever. I took my 2000 Expedition (5.4LV8) in fora plug change. (don't laugh. That engine has fuel injection and was way over myback yard mech skills). I also agreed to an oil change and specifically said5W30. Long-short. They used 5W20. Should I stress and make them do it overand go back to what has been in that engine since 2002, or just leave italone. Colorado Springs, CO. Just about to enter Spring, and our Summers can bein the 90's. I will be towing a boat before next oil change due.
Allthoughts/comments are welcome.........unless snide. I am to old to deal withsnide.
Thankyou,
Geezer

Hello Geezer welcome on a forum. About 5w-30 Its the best motor oil. It is an advanced full synthetic engine oil designed to keep your engine running like new by providing exceptional wear protection.

I personally would take it back and make them put in the proper weight oil. Your year/make/model was designed for and calls for 5W-30. The 30 weight is the thickness of the oil at the engines internal operating temperature (not to be confused with coolant temperature). Too thin of an oil at operating temperature cannot maintain its required film strength. in the early 2000's, MFGs went to using the 5W-20 to help them meet their CAFE requirements and to lower their CARBON output requirements.
