Looking For an E series With 300 Inline 6 For Towing
So I'm looking for an E series with an 300 inline 6 engine (4.9L) because I like how it's got better access compared to a v type engine and is easy to build for more power if need be but I'm unsure what specs to look for. I will probably eventually want to tow my 6700lb sailboat considerable distances on rare occasions but mostly I'll be using it to explore and camp or just driving from Canada to Mexico to spend time on said boat. My question is: Did Ford use different frames for E250s and 350s or were they the same and the only difference was the drive train and suspension? Like could I just swap in heavy duty springs for the occasional towing trip or what? I don't really need an E350 most of the time. Aldo curious how much worse an extended van is for heavy towing vs the regular length.
Also, could one swap an inline 6 into an E series with a V8 with relative ease or would it be necessary to fabricate special engine mounts? Hard to find a good E series with the right engine.

That six was pretty reliable because it had plenty of reserve to keep it going. If you jack it up you will diminish that reserve and now it will always be kinda pushed to the limit.
With an 8 cyl you have a power plant that will handle extra work. The 8s had some problems, but if well maintained did the job.
For some reason parts for the 8s were always easier to obtain. Those sixes were not always the easiest to work on. I guess it is personal preference..
