Default Nightmare 2009 Expedition

I joined this forum to try and get some help in the repair and upkeep of my 2009 Ford Expedition. As I will explain I have had continual problems with poor build quality and it's expensive to repair.

We needed a second car with lots of seating so purchased a low mileage 2009 (in 2010) We also have a 1998 Expedition with 150 k miles that is old reliable it has no issues other then fading red paint and worn leather on the steering wheel.

Not all problems have come at once, but they never stop.

So far we have had problems with:

Drivers airbag -fixed under warranty

GPS -fixed under warranty

Drivers side a/c - fixed under warranty

After the ford warranty expired

A/C to the drivers seat broken - still broken

Heater controls fixed by me by replacement of the temp sensor. Dealer wanted 300 to fix. Part cost me 100 and took 10 min to install.

Passenger power seat (fixed by me) With no warranty left from ford and I didn't buy the super special 5000 dollar dealership extended warranty, I needed to fix the passenger seat myself. Dealer wanted 750 dollars for the entire seat track assembly. I pulled the seat and it's a 2 inch cable, stripped at the motor. The seat motor was not bolted on place and allowed excessive play. Judging by the empty screw holes they didn't install them in the factory as they should have. Dealer says my problem, not his. I can't afford to give my dealer blank checks so I got a rod of soft steel and broke out the dial-mic and 45 min later had a new shaft. Works great!

Rear DVD (still broken but was most likely broken by kids) Ford dealers do not repair the DVD players and only installs new ones. Cost estimate is 1000 dollars plus labor.

I have been checking ebay and have been unable to decode what rear overhead dvd players are a direct replacement. For example the one I removed is part number 9L1T-10E947-AB34T1. I found a replacement 8A8T-10E947-AB31TB for 1/4 of the dealer price. How can I tell if the replacement is compatible with the SYNC system? All the sellers say they work but when you ask about SYNC they don't know the difference.

One of the rear speakers has gone out. (this months little extra)

Also sync system is not fully operable with iPhones. You would think some effort would go into making it fully work with one of the most popular types of phones. Music played via bluetooth sounds like it's played in a drain pipe. No text display features.

(just bitchn no help required)

The nanny features that do not allow you to work the navigation above 2 mph are stupid. Say you are driving to Disney (in August sans drivers side a/c) and you decide to surprise grandma. You want to put in grandma's address? You will have to pull over and put it in. Want to find a particular restaurant when already on the road? Start scrolling through 200 pages of generally unspecific catagories you don't want to see, because you are already on the highway and ford engineers know it's safer to have you scroll for 10 minutes then enter a zip code and a street. Ford's NAV nanny forces us to use our phones vice any of the nav features if we have to change our destination enroute.

Is there any way to disable the Navigation Nanny?

Love the fold down 3rd row. It's about the only thing I have not had to fix.

Almost left off that the paint is bubbling of the front of the hood. Dealer says they talked to ford and it's not covered.

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. (dvd player/Nav Nanny/bubbling paint)

You really don't sound like a happy Ford owner. Did you get this car looked at by a mechanic BEFORE you bought it?
As for the issues:
1) Try a total reflash of the sync system by a stupid tech like me. It solves a lot of issues with these systems, but a word of warning from this idiot tech: I PHONES ARE THE KISS OF DEATH FOR SYNC!

Sorry about that.
2) The DVD and sync are 2 different systems. The dvd replacement shouldn't matter. Try to keep the kids at bay, and it might last longer. I really don't like having to pay for them either, but Ford has to charge someone if the kids are stuffing gumdrops into the dvd player.
3) As for the navigation, there are owner settable item on there, like shortest route, landmarks, gas stations, etc. Try to read the manual and see if any of this can help you out with this.
4) Try another phone; sync has a lot of problems with software and firmware, so make sure yours is up to date.
5) As for the heated/cooled seats, try unplugging the module for the seat heater/cooler under the seat. These had some problems with the fit of the pins in the connectors, and it makes me happy to know that I'm the stupid human in the real world that has the power in my hands to unplug the dammed thing and let it reboot and work correctly.
And one other thing. Does anyone besides me remember when cars DIDN'T have rear seat dvd and heated/cooled seats? Somehow, my mother got me through the 1960's in a '62 Galaxie that DIDN'T have ABS, Traction control, power brakes, heated and cooled cup holders, seatbelts, or tempered glass. I somehow made it without all this, and now I spend all day working on it.
When you buy a top notch car with this many options, sooner or later they're going to break, and get expensive to fix. It's interesting to note that you didn't say anything about how the car runs. Is is still running well? Starting ok?
I do feel for you, believe it or not, but I think you might have gotten a lemon, or one that was punished during its first life as a fleet rental (just thinking aloud). I got an extended warranty on my Escort, and I had only the pleasure of knowing that I was being paid to rebuild the transmission in my ****box so i could go home and do it all over again the next day. Good luck!

Your are correct about not being a happy ford owner. Having both a 1998 and a 2009 I can tell you they are very different vehicles. In 10 years I know the 1998 will still be working. Both are Eddie Bauer.

Car was great for the first month of use, was bragging to all my buddies about what a great car it was. Then one problem after another. The car runs well but when nothing works other then the engine it is only an overpriced econoline van.

The drivers seat a/c will blow some air if I cycle the switch. By blow it's more like an asmatic with a straw blowing on your back. I need to locate the valve and troubleshoot. Hope I don't have to pull the dash to get to it. If so will leave it for now.

Yes we did it as kids in the counry squire station wagon without DVD player. But dad would end up smacking us during the trip. Kids didn't put anything in the DVD player but we road trip about once a month so it gets used. The oldest was loading a movie and it didn't go in all the way, it almost goes in all the way and turns really slow, gives you an error reading disk msg and ejects it. Also trips to Disney are 18 hr movie trips. ------ I have 4 girls between the ages of 1 and 8 so we are heading to Disney in December sooooooo I NEED IT!

So if sync is not related to the rear DVD I can use one from any 2007-2009 ford/Lincoln/mercury? Please confirm!

I'm really not happy about the lack of quality with this car or what happened when Ford changed to all plastic and over automated the Expedition.

I'm a car guy I have restored several cars (BMWs, Classic Mustangs, 56 Dodge, 88 corvette. I know cars, I can troubleshoot/repair electronics. The level of dollar for value of this car is about the level of Fiat, Triumph and Range Rover. I paid 40k for a car that I can only sell for 20k.

Recently the passenger blender motor is stuck on full cold. It's located behind the dash and I'm sure the part will cost me several hundred dollars plus a weekend to fix.

I did get a replacement DVD system off of Ebay for 100 dollars. Took 5 minutes to intall.(Screw you Ford dealer!)

I recently upgraded to a 2004 Ford Excursion diesel. It's back from the years when there was metal on Ford vehicles.

Ford needs to work on it's quality control and designing reliable systems, perhaps concentrate less on commercials about how great they are.

I would say you struck a nerve today !
If you can check this site for possible fix of blend door problem,
HeaterTreater™

I don't know if there is a difference between American plastic and Chow Mein plastic, but If Ford was smart they would have more of their stuff made here in America. They charge the price of American made stuff and are giving us overseas junk.
