Unhappy Slow engaging Transmission

I have an issue with my econoline work van... When initially starting up, The transmission will go into reverse no problem but when engaged into drive it will take up to 3 minutes to slip into gear?? I've driven this van for 5 yrs, and owned it for one. It has always (in the last five years that i know of) done this. It will go directly into gear once it's warmed up and driven for a while, but once it cools down i start all over again... I have no other problems as it shifts great once it gets going down the road!! I'm a firm believer in not fixing it if it ain't broken and i've been waiting for it to drop on me but it seems that isn't going to happen... Can anyone identify with my problem and help me get off to a quicker start?

Thank you

Sometimes I believe your reasoning could be correct, however, routine maintenance isn't quite the same as "it's broke". The idea is to try to keep it from breaking.
When was the last time the trans fluid and filter were changed ? That could be a good place to start in solving the slow engagement when cold problem.
There could also be a leaking clutch apply piston seal that when warmed up expands enough to allow a good seal. Let us know what you think and if the fluid and filter have ever been changed. Thanks

Hanky,

Thanks for the input! This is my first post, sorry if it was so vague. I will definately do fluid and filter change to start with, as i have no idea when this was done last. or if at all... I so appreciate your response!!
