HI hanky, well I just took two on my Iphone 8 only thing is I can't find one of them... oh well
just reinstalled the driveshaft again.... NO way does it fit. it's easy 1.5" long... it did fit before I started ...
So why , what has happened or changed??
I have a pic of the shaft next to the Differential ... you can see how far past it is
I was going to try and remove the seal on the case, but that would ruin the new seal.. $$$
So let me ask this... When the yoke slides into the housing on the output shaft it only goes to the flange surface flush with the Dust Seal
correct?? The yoke does not slide past the bushing at all? This is nuts....
let me see if I can upload one pic
the one photo is the Yoke with 2 white lines drawn on it so you can see how much of the yoke is outside the case.. I do have a photo from before
I took the driveshaft out, but it's very dark.. flash I guess did not go off...

Hi Dave,
Keep in mind when the rear of the vehicle hits a bump and the axle assy rides up , the angle of the driveshaft changes and becomes straighter and increases in length and so that yoke must be able to slide in and out..
If the bushing accepts the yoke one reason you can't get it to all the way on is you must make sure the internal splines of the yoke must line up with the external splines of the output shaft so it can slide on those splines. From the pix, it looks as if you are at that point where you need to rotate the driveshaft carefully to have those splines line up or you will never get the yoke to slide on to on the output shaft.

Hi hanky
So glad to have you sorta guide me.
I have thought about the spline situation... what is stuck in my mind is the ID of the bushing and the OD of the slip yoke
the slip is 1.572 OD before the shoulder the bushing is 1.606 ID I guess it should fit that 1" or so.... well I'll be under the car tomorrow
morning...
I'll let you know what happends. Please cross your fingers for me, oh next time you hear from me I'll be bouncing of rubber walls.
Best

Hello all
nothing new on the drive shaft install.. had it out today took measurements did everything I could think of, even set the rear wheels back on
the ground no change... when it was installed it seemed to fit fine, maybe it was not... How do we measure for a drive shaft..
Any way since I working around the car anyway, I installed the front seat yesterday...
I went with the two tone blue, because I like it... I used cloth for the seating area, down the front of the bench.. so on a HOT day if I'm
in shorts I won't burn my legs or backside.. This car is the same one my parents bought in 1962... except this is a 9 passenger model
It's a 62 , with a 72 Cleveland and a 2001 transmission... talk about Frankenstein. sanded and repainted all the metal interior parts and I also painted the outside... it was "light blue" I went with Wimbledon White, which is a historic color for Ford.
oh also I installed the front spindle from a 77 Ranchero so the wagon has front disc's... I have a 79 Lincoln rear axle with
disc brakes that I would like to install but it is coil spring and control arms... enough....
Is there any chance that the drive shaft is just to long? The total amount of shaft inside the hosing is only about 3"...
Best

Houston, We have a problem !

Looking back at your initial post , if I understand correctly , you installed a different trans from the one that was originally in the vehicle , is this true?
If so , yes ,you may need to either get a driveshaft from a similar set up or have yours altered by a shop that does driveshaft work.If you ask around in your area
a shop may be able to direct you to the place. They would tell you exactly what dimensions they require to make one for you.
Driveshafts can be and are different lengths depending on trans length .and some other things .
If the wheelbase of your vehicle is different from the whee;base of the supplying vehicle that is only one consideration. You might be able to find a driveshaft of the correct length by first getting a dimension from the yoke on the differential to the tail shaft housing and go from there.

Hi hanky
yes the transmission is a 4r70w... I've had this for many years now.. the drive shaft fit fine before I took it out the replace the seal and bushing in the
extension housing... I think my last resort is to take the driveshaft and housing to the driveshaft shop up in Gardena... I've known them for many years
although they did change ownership.
I just can not figure this out.. I took the housing and revesed it and slid it into the bushing and it almost reached to the end.
the only other option is that I damaged the bushing when I installed it.. and there is something ther that is holding it... I have checked
ran my finger around the top of the bushing, and felt nothing...
oh well I'll keep at it...
No nothing about the car physically has changed.. just the parts.. like I said the driveshaft fit fine... now it does not and the only thing that has changed is
the bushing.....
Best and again thanks for your assistance...

Hello all
This will be the last post on the subject.. please do not reply..
I want to thank hanky for you suggestion and input on my "problem". as of this morning the drive shaft is in place.
Now a little background.. I have always seemed to repair other people automotive problems easier then my own. I owe this
to the fact that cars I work on mostly will be Fords. I also at one time had a small shop of my own, mostly on pre WWII cars
and all Packard's and Fords until 1975... Of course Packard went under in 1956, I have a 400
But often on my own cars I seem to go blank.. mostly because what is happening can not happen like in this case I just got frustrated..
There was no magic involved, I just realized that the angle of the slip yoke was not parallel to the output shaft... that's all and the slip yoke
was catching on the lip of the bushing. Never had it happen before, but there is always a first time..
Take care all, Best
again Thanks hanky
