Default Drum brake wheel cylinder question

1998 Contour SE with 8" rear drum brakes.

Should there be a spring between the wheel cylinder's little pistons? My rebuild kit didn't include one. Didn't find one inside the old cylinder, but the last guy who worked on the brakes was seriously lacking. Maybe just neglected to put it back in...

Yes , definitely should have a spring in there.
It's purpose is to keep the brass expanders against the cups inside the wheel cyl.to maintain an effective seal.

Some of the bargain wheel cylinder kits will only come with the piston cups, dust seals, and lube.

These pistons have seals set in recesses, so there's no way for seal and piston to get separated. So do I still need springs?

This is the first time I have seen anything like this
.I'm not sure I would use them..
I have some reservations regarding travel of the cups and pistons.
