Default 1991 econoline - need some help or advice.

1991 Econoline with a 5.8L with 200,000 kms. Just now really getting around to dig into it. Has anyone got a link for a proper service manual? I found the Haynes 1969 to 1991, but it's not easy to sort through. Been a long time since i've worked on older vehicles.

It drives and idles well when warm, but once in a while stumbles on acceleration from stop. Almost seems like the engine dies then roars to life. This thing is a pig on fuel at the moment, lucky if I'm getting 5 miles to the gallon. Blows black smoke out the tailpipe when cold or when I hit the gas in park.

Pulled the codes, 31, 33 and 41. Installed a new EGR valve, didn't realize the sensor was separate so i have to find one. Still have to check the O2 sensors. Can't find any vacuum leaks - not saying there isn't any.

There is also a ticking under the hood that sounds like valve lifters, but it's definitely not. Needs to be at higher RPM's and driving to hear it - and the sound doesn't come when increasing idle in park. Thought it might be the EGR, so I removed it and blocked the ports. Noise is still there.

And lastly, the picture in on the passenger side with doghouse removed. The white arrow points to a steel pipe that goes under the van. It's broken off, and I have no clue as to where it's supposed to go. I assume it's an air line.

Thanks.
