dome lights, '92 Explorer
Dome lights quit coming on when the doors were opened. Worked by turning headlight switch. Now they won't work at all. Checked bulb and fuse. They are OK. What next, headlight switch, turn signal switch or ignition switch? Tried a new headlight switch, no change. Another problem is that the tachometer jumps to 3300 rpm as soon as the ignition switch is turned to "run" and stays there. This is even before the engine is started. It does not respond to engine speed.

The tach is now working. I found a couple of videos on the internet that showed how to do it. You have to dismantle the instrument cluster and take the tachometer out. Looking at the back of the tach, with the top up, on the upper left of the circuit board there are four or five solder joints that will look "dirty" or corroded compared to the rest of the soldered connections and that corner of the board may show signs of over heating. With a small soldering iron, carefully re-melt the solder on these connections so they can re-connect to the components. I cleaned mine with denatured alcohol first. Can't say how long it will last, but it's working now. Still haven't found the cure for the dome lights, though.

I should have written down the names of the videos so I could have put them in the reply. They were for F-150 trucks, but the idea is the same. The tach unplugs from the cluster as do all the other gauges. You have to be a little careful so as not to crack the plastic piece under the guage face. Also, do not unscrew the three screws in the face, they hold the works of the guage and are not involved in this repair.
