Not knowing how many miles your vehicle has on the odometer or conditions where it was driven, Suggest you get underneath and do a thorough check of all the U-joints.
It could be one of them is lacking lubricant, and when direction is changed , the squeak/grinding is heard. A visual check for rust trails at the U-joint crosses can be a tip-off as to which one it could be .If 4WD is not active, you could confine your attention to the rear driveshaft. Sometimes you can confirm if that is the problem by attempting to move the driveshaft manually and the grinding/squeak can be felt.If nothing is found there , we move on to other possibilities .

The exlorer as 96000 miles and it is a 2wd. For a second i think it could be a transmission mount going bad. But then again i am not sure what it could really be.
