Question 1994 F-150 E40D Trans

Recently my sons transmission started to slip alot. We had it checked out at the local trans shop and they recommended that it be rebuilt and the cost was high. We have looked around for rebuilt trans and they can be high also. Well, we finally found one in a 1991 van with the same size motor and all. (5.8) We bought the trans and pulled it and then we pulled the one in the truck. Everything on the trans are the same except for the shift lever shaft on the driver side of the trans. The one on the truck has a threaded shaft on the end and the the one on the van does not. The van had shift linkage and the truck has a shift cable. The arm on the shift lever of the van has a hole where the linkage snaps into it and the trucks shift cable has a hole on the end of the shift cable. To make this work, can I install a bolt or something that will connect the shift cable to the vans shift lever arm that is attached to the trans?

HELP!
