It would help if we knew the year and model of the vehicle.
The only thing we would look for in the engine compartment is after the engine has had a chance to warm up, do the hoses going to the heater get hot?
We would look for different things depending on what those results were.

When you choose the function of defrost ,Ford uses a little electric motor to move a blend door to direct incoming air to what function the operator selects.
It sounds like the little motor isn't working or the door is stuck. Most times that little motor needs to be replaced. Not a fun job. but not that difficult either.
Suggest you have a good shop check and verify that is what is not working.. Called, "Blend door actuator".,in this case it is a directional door actuator..
