Shift Rail
I don't have a pix available at this time, but will try to provide a hopefully useful description..
Looking at the shift rails from the top with the shift tower off you should see 3 slotted rails. When the rails are in the neutral position all 3 slots line up together. With the shift stick installed the tip of the stick can slide in all 3 rails from left to right.
If any one of the slots does not line up with the other 2 , the rail has a fork on the lower end and that means it is in one of the gear positions.
Just take a screwdriver and you can move the rail back into the neutral position. They have a detent with a ball and spring , you might need to use a little force to move the out of place rail.
