Yes, the marks are on the pulley. Just make sure that # 1 piston is at it's compression stroke when lining up the timing mark to TDC.

I'm looking at the same picture way2old posted for you and my 97Ford manual shows a 75 degree angle where way2old's picture shows 38 degrees. Was the angle changed somewhere along the line?

The tool ( Syncro Positioning Tool) part no. my book shows is; T95T-12200-A
I don't know if there is another tool available.
The pictures are identical except for the # of degrees shown in the picture.

I have 97 taurus 68000 miles oil light is on lifter noise up in the engine. Oil pan is full of new oil. My girl has drove this car about 6 miles on three trips like this. What do you guys think about the crank and rods. The car starts and runs with new noise up high in the engine. I do not think the engine has any oil pressure. I have not been able to check out the problem. What would fail with this low of miles?

hanky. Could you post the pic you have? I am getting my pictures from the online Ford Manuals from Ford's website.

Default It's running again

Thanks guys for the help. The car is running! I can’t believe with 179K and driving twice to town with no pressure it still runs.

As for my questions I guess I should've looked in my Chilton’s book first because it describes all this. However it refers to 38 degrees the way2old's picture shows. I snagged a couple of pics from the manual. The alignment tool my co-worker loaned was different. It had a smaller window for the sensor vane where mine needs a much wider slot. So, I’m currently running with the sensor disconnected and it is running OK. CEL is still on, it has been since we bought the car. I’m trying to find the correct alignment tool now and will try to realign again. I did have a little trouble getting the pump shaft to line up and go into the cam sync. assy. but finally managed.

Final thoughts; maybe the original pump was going bad causing the gear to wear excessively. The camshaft gear looked good so hopefully it will be fine. My friend suggested to just sell the car quick but I can’t do that. I’ll try and update again in a week or so and hopefully she’ll still be running.

Re to mkhunting: maybe the easiest way to check for oil pressure is to pickup a new oil filter (can’t hurt and only $4) and try running for 30 seconds, take the new filter back off and see if it’s full. That was my biggest clue.

I hate to tell you this , but I don't know how to post a pix on the post.
Anyway, the Ford manual is for 1997 Taurus/Sable and it is in section 03-14-13.
I will try to get some assistance to learn how to post a pix.

Wierd. It seems that Ford manuals would show the same charts. Wonder if the publishing date would have any bearing on it. I am using Ford's on line repair manuals.

Knowing Ford , anything is possible. My manual is a 97 date and I am wondering if possibly due to emission /performance considerations, Ford backed off the injector timing which is what I believe the cam syncronizer influences. I'm just speculating here and have no other explanation to offer that might make any sense. What do you think?

Sounds good to me. I just try to make them run, not make them.
